A Trip to the Museum
I visited the Museum of Contemporary Art with a friend and while in the gift store I came across two objects that really fascinated me because of its creativity, and how well I believed it combined art and design:
Perpetual Calendar and the Mondri Vase
It was interesting to see how everyday objects of a calendar and vase could be designed in a unique yet functional way, prompting myself to focus on the field of product design.
I decided to come up with a problem that could address the relationship between art (in terms of aesthetic beauty) and design through utility. Good design is not just about how something looks aesthetically, but about functionality.
Sounds fun! What are the next steps?
After having researched and looked at designs that resonate with me and understanding why it works well, I would produce my own everyday product that will have an artistic flair to it.
A closer look into Don Norman’s book ‘The Design of Everyday Things’ (1988) and Soetsu Yanagi’s ‘The Beauty of Everyday Things’ (2019) will help ground my creative process. This research aspect will be a very crucial stage in the beginning stages of the project so that I have a guide to create something successfully.
What I ultimately produce doesn’t need to be something tangible, it could be a detailed conceptual drawing with annotations. I'll create a mockup of a poster that promotes the product.
